Why does my friend only discourage me?

I went to visit my friend the other day. I’ve recently met a guy and we are making lots of plans together. I told her about my new relationship and how excited I was about it and all she could say was negative things about it. We are in the early stage so texting all the time and calling each other. She kept saying things like ‘don’t worry if it doesn’t work out with him’ and I showed her a picture of him and she basically insulted him and made me feel really bad about the whole thing. She kept discouraging the relationship by asking ‘do you think he will be like guys you’ve dated in the past who were abusive to you?’

Why is she saying such negative things about it?

Well, she isn't much of a friend and I don't know why you are still calling her that. Unless this guy was really bad for you in a way that would put you in emotional of physical danger, she should keep opinions to herself.

This is especially true since the relationship is new. Does she know him somehow? I am guessing no because you showed her a picture but just asking. Sounds like one of two things here. Either she is jealous or just plain mean and not much of a friend.

You shouldn't let someone that negative sway your decision in anything, including relationships. I would distance myself from this person because she is toxic. Toxic people rarely change.

She is going to continue to undermine you relationship and that is not good considering it is still fresh and you are learning about each other. I would keep my distance from this so called friend and not let it ruin something that has potential. Best of luck to you.

She’s not a friend, more of an enemy, a friend can look out for you but not to this level, if you are happy with this chap then good luck, don’t worry about what she has to say if it’s not lifting you up it’s not worth listening to, also I think you should bin her off as she’s obviously not a nice person.

It sounds like she’s jealous, overly competitive, Self -absorbed, and only cares about her happiness. In other words, not a good friend.

Maybe she’s had bad experiences herself and is now scarred by them.
