context matters. When, where, who were they, how did you catch them? I try really hard to be polite but if someone says something while I'm at my desk at work deep in thought, it's possible I may mumble back and not even notice.

They could just be a grump or anti-social. Maybe they just haven't had their coffee yet. Maybe they just had a bad night or just didn't get any pussy.
