You don't. You simply don't because people usually go to the gym to to their program and not to be disturb by people attempting to hit on them.

Not only is it a big disturbance for the victim of those approaches but girls really know why guys do want to approach them in the gym. They are usually sparsely dressed with tight clothes and the only reason why guys do want to approach girls that do workout is not to ask them for assistance nor is it to ask them for the brand of sneakers.

No, the only and sole reason why guys hit on girls at the gym is a desperate attempt to get into their pants. As simple as that.

I did hate it when I was at the gym and guys would waste my time and my money (I did pay for my membership) just to hit on me. That is the only reason why I cancelled my membership and did chose a women's only gym. Since then, I have never been harassed.

Do the girls at the gym a favor and do not hit on them. They will be thankful.

You never approach a woman (or a man if you are a woman) when they are busy, at work or in any place where you see that they are busy or if you see that they are reading or having earphone on. The latter 2 ones are indicators that people don't want to be disturbed

Other than that, you could join a club or take up a hobby and it is much easier to make contact with people that share the same interests as you do. Alternatively, you can go clubbing but that is not a guarantee that you will meet the right people.
