It meant a simple life where they could have a vegetable garden and raise a family in a wholesome town.
God only know what the term means now days.
Do many women actually dream of a house like that with a picket fence, or are most of them too enamored with consumerism?24 Reply- +1 y
@exitseven. Same here. My wife and I have a cute 1600 sq ft house in a rural area with gardens and fruit trees. There are no white picket fences, but it's the equivalent. :-)

+1 yBecause that's the destination of life. The main reason of us, is only to pass on our genes, as per from a biological perspective. (by biological reality, we are only a box to carry the main stuff) You may not know this, but in biology, the women is the main representative of our kind. ( the egg carries the full baby less just two genes, which are only needed for diversification) Therefore, leadership biologically is placed on her. Men are just there to assist her in this endeavor and make it better. This is just to show how important females are and how all the fundamental decisions are biologically entrusted into her biological mind.
So if she is the leader, the whole procreation responsibility biologically falls on her. Now our current society has certain expectations and generic ideas of what a home for the masses is, and this is a suburban little home where there is a white Picket fence and maybe a dog etc., as the bedrock of the north American anglophone Family. As mentioned above her fundamental urge of the responsibility to procreate and the pressures of her biological clock, coupled with the idea of societies ideas of a home, ( which is the first step towards reaching her goal), causes her to associate this innate biological objective with a home with a picket fence. Really this picture of a facet of a woman is really a vey primal and fundamental picture of her ethos, it's telling and deep and the bedrock of our species.

+1 yIt's not the literal house with the picket fence. It's a metaphor. It just means to have a happy, conventional life (with a cute house with a white picket fence, a husband, usually a couple of kids, etc). It's meant to represent "conventional marriage and/or family."
When someone says that, they basically mean: I want to be stable, secure and do the "conventional thing" when it comes to the kind of home and lifestyle you want. It's a throw-back to the 1950's (the fence part. I think...)

@call_me_scar I found it in Google & now you have me thinking about the Forrest Gump house.

I think it's his love interest childhood house the one that got torn down when Gump had the money
Nesting maybe, the desire to build a family and wanting that safe pretty perfect place to raise that family. I just want to be safe in a place where I do not have to worry about moving every year for the better priced rent. I don't know can I say because that's what makes me feel happy, a nice house, great yard, loving, caring, protective man to raise a family with in a beautiful home and great area.

+1 yWhat does a picket fence symbolize?
Symbolism. A picket fence, ideally white, has iconic status as Americana, symbolizing the ideal middle-class suburban life, with a family and children, large house, and peaceful living.00 Reply- 2K opinions shared on Girl's Behavior topic.
+1 yYea I personally dont give a damn about a fence. But i want a house built and i want it to be elegant but midsize. No tiny home yet no mansion. A nice 3 bed, 2 bath, 2 car garage will do

+1 yA house with a picket fence is traditional and a sign of consistency and solidarity. Though it's rarely a reality, it is often a fantasy for women who seek a solid long-term relationship.

+1 yDue to nostalgia of the ideal 1950's life, it became a visual shorthand for the good life for many Americans. I know plenty of women that are content with being in an apartment, though.
