"Women and children first" makes me immediately think of getting them into life boats on a sinking ship. But it's also the attitude of getting them to safety while the men get busy doing what needs to be done.

Traditionally, men were protectors. It's in our DNA.

A man places himself like a wall between the vulnerable and danger. The military defends against aggression. And even if a man isn't in the military, he does the same thing. Women can do the same thing but they are typically less courageous or capable, although some are. Don't threaten a mama bear's children.

Traditional super heroes portrayed the stalwart, ethical, self sacrificing, masculine attitude.

Men who cowered in the cellar or pushed their way past women and children to get into the life boats were seen as worthless, lily livered cowards.

I guess the survival of the species is also a factor. When you are hunting deer or elk, you shoot bucks because 1) they look more magnificent, but 2) if one buck goes down, all it takes is one more to keep impregnating the does to keep producing more deer.

It for the purpose that men are physically stronger than woman and children so in a case of a emergency men are more likely to survive than women and children and also because children need their mom to raise them, so can't let the woman possibly suffer death and her children without their mom.

Unfortunately, I don't think the maker of that rule was so well intentioned. I think it was so women and children could be saved more often and men would die more often because let's face it. Men are worthless according to women.

Joking aside, it actually isn't "a rule" anywhere.

Its one of those made up rules that people believe. Such as "hold the door open for ladies" there actually isn't a rule that says you should.

Simply put, to a society individual men are more expendable than women. Why? Women can only have one successful pregnancy every ten months or so under normal conditions. One woman for ten men basically = one successful pregnancy per year. An average of one man for every ten women can repopulate the society far more quickly.
