I'm trying to think of why my girlfriend tests me and also is also mean. She tries to say things to make me jealous and is also mean at times. Do you think it's for attention?

She's at the phase where she's trying to test your strength of character. If you show that you're bothered, she'll see you as weak and keep on disrespecting you. May or may not lead to cheating and/or dumping. If you show confidence and wit, she'll see you as strong and ease up/stop. This is how women rationalize a man's value: if you can't stand up for yourself, especially against the weaker sex, then you're beneath respect.

The main flaw in this is that it assumes men think like women. We have different channels for aggression. If we perceive an attack, or instinct is to fight back like any human. But we generally don't want to direct that energy at somebody who we care about and apparently cares about us. There's also the fear you might say something that hurts them which in turn might lead to an easily avoidable break up.

This thinking is also flawed. Women want to feel good and bad emotions. She might feel hurt or scared, but she wants to feel protected by first-hand acknowledgement of your strength. Since strength is something that disappears with disuse, women are constantly testing you to see if you're still the man she fell for.

This isn't an excuse for their bullshit. This is just the "reasoning" behind it.

I think I know what he's referring to. Many years ago, my girlfriend had a guy friend from high school come to visit. I was working in a supermarket and they spent the day together. I specifically asked her when I left for work that morning for her *not* to bring him to my store, because of the furor and gossip it would cause if she did. Of course, she paraded him right through the store and I had to deal with all sorts of questions and innuendo for days afterwards.
