Why do teenage girls cut themselves ?

Not a girl, but from my own experience I can say it‘s mostly because you feel numb, you hate yourself or you want to feel something different than usual. Self harm releases dopamine. So it‘s kind of like any other drug that releases dopamine.


My worst SH time was when my girlfriend broke up. I have very bad seperarion anxiety and I fell into an extremely depressive state with alcohol abuse and suicidal thoughts. Everyone has their own problems, so there isn‘t really one definite answer, but I think the majority of people don‘t do it for attention.


I stopped when I turned 19, because puberty makes you more emotional, but also because I accepted things. Life isn‘t the best for me, but I realized there are different things I can do than harming myself.


I don‘t know why it‘s more common with girls, but that‘s something you can look up online, I think.

The reason anyone hurts themselves, it has to do with them thinking the world would be the same/better without them. When you're very emotional and life isn't going right, it's easy for bad thoughts to come.

Teenagers are going through puberty, so hormones and mood swings everywhere. It can be bullies, parents, bad friends, relationships, etc. The list goes on, but it's worse when you're going through puberty.

self harm isn’t inclusive to a single age group or a single sex; people of all ages (unless they’re, like, five), whether they be male or female, can suffer from self-deprecating thoughts and even self harm.

there have already been a few comments with good and valid answers. the most common triggers for this behavior can be due to mental instability, poor reception to pain, or as a means to cope with overwhelming anxiety or depression.

I only had one experience with this at around age fifteen, and it was because my prescription had a heavier dose of Zoloft (an anti-depressant, I believe) then I should have taken at that time. after notifying my psychiatrist, my ma set me up with a better prescription, and it was fixed within a few days.

I had ended up in psychosis I think, from the medication, which made me feel the sudden impulse to hurt myself. luckily, my thighs didn’t scar.

I know somebody who knows somebody and it's because their parents put too much pressure on them to succeed and be the perfect person when they were teenagers. The only reason I know is that their best friend was my cousin. She now has a PhD and her husband has a PhD from MIT and a law degree too. Both very good looking people too and have kids and both deeply religious.

Something wrong is going on in their head. It can be either because of depression, physical abuse, selfish and attention seekers or other psychological issues.

i don’t do it anymore but it was usually as a form of “self punishment” usually when my grades were low or if I was really disappointed in myself

Plenty of adults do it too.
For me, it's the leaving a physical mark makes me feel better and like I've done something "productive' over just a crying break down.

i do it still and im an adult. its pleasure, i can taste my own blood. its a way of dealing with emotions. its a good way actually

They're hurting usually. Usually there's something going wrong in the household like a divorce or neglect or abuse in the home.
