Because it’s pure stupidity. Part of it is probably a trend as well for a lot of women to say things like this as well. I doubt that so many women are actually in serious danger of some strange man attacking them. I think women interpret things completely different. Their perception of things vs a man is completely different. If a man simply looks at her for a second she autocratically things creep. Some dude was checking me out in the parking lot as I walked passed when he simply glanced at her. The stupidity of this whole thing is ridiculous. What they’re saying is that they don’t trust men in uniform. The men who run to save their lives in fires, show up when the cops are needed, the men in the military who protect us, etc. Those are all strangers. They’re saying a majority of those men want to hurt them. I wish men would just stop helping women all together unless it was their family. Then we’ll see who shows up for them when something goes wrong. What these women are also saying is that people like my son who is the most politest, helpful kid is also a predator. Just like their own sons, their fathers, uncles, etc. Because even though they may not think that about their own male family members other women do. Women aren't saying they'd choose a bear over a man to date, obviously. They're saying they'd rather be alone in the woods with a bear than with a strange man. That makes sense, because bears live in the woods, and statistically they are far less likely to attack unprompted. I've come across bears in the woods, and just walked away, and they don't chase you. Plus it's cool to see a bear, because bears are cool, and you don't see them often.

Would you really pick being alone with a strange man in the woods over a bear? What would the point of that be?

No, in fact men are far less likely than bears to attack someone simply for being near them.
The snag is that women encounter men orders of magnitude more frequently than bears, and are more likely to have been hurt by a man than a bear simply because they're around men every day and have probably never even seen a bear... so it has messed with their perception of which is the more dangerous.

But between a 100% chance of encountering a bear or a 100% chance of encountering a man on equal grounds, the bear is by far the more dangerous choice.

Because women are terrified of men. Clearly many are more afraid of men than bears. And why do you think that is? Why would so many women say they’d rather risk getting torn into pieces by a bear than run into a man in the woods? I don’t know, lots of bears won’t attack you and of course lots of men also won’t attack you. Maybe the reasoning is if worst case scenario happens would you rather have the worst case scenario with a bear or a man? Would your rather be attacked and killed by a bear or raped, tortured, kidnapped, sold/trafficked and then killed by a man? Because they encounter hundreds of men on a daily basis, but aren't paying attention to the vast majority that are not horrible monsters... because the few that ARE horrible monsters tend to leave more of an impact, and it skews their perception.

So they don't realise that between a guaranteed encounter with a random Bear and a guaranteed encounter with a random Man, that they're far more likely to be clawed open, dismembered, eaten alive or even buried alive by the bear than they are to be raped, tortured, kidnapped, sold/trafficked and then killed by the man.
Most men will not do those things.
Most bears don't even need a reason.

The question was put to men that if they were walking alone in the woods would they rather run into a bear or a man. 3/4 of women said a bear. It had nothing to do with dating a bear. Basically the idea was they felt a bear was less likely to be a threat.
