I can't imagine why a dentist would have to use a nasogastric tube.

I'm wondering if she is undergoing some kind of throat or esophageal procedure and the tube is to suck out blood that would run down into her esophagus during the surgery..

I thought you'd know what this is you've never had one used on you before. It's you open you mouth up more and the string is for two things one to teach you how to control you gag reflex and to torture different degrees of tension brings about different sensations
