Why have women (at least in my area) gone from full coverage to cheeky bikini bottoms in such a seemingly short period of time?

For the record, obviously women are allowed to do what they want and my opinion doesn't matter.

But the change from full coverage to cheeky bikini bottoms (at least in my area) was just very sudden. It felt like almost an overnight change.

One day full coverage bikini bottoms were the norm and cheeky ones were seen as crass and vulgar.

Then the next day cheeky bikini bottoms are the norm and full coverage ones are only worn by either religious women or older women.

And I noticed this in not only random women, but my female friends and acquaintances as well. All of them went from full coverage to cheeky just like that. And so did my girlfriend as well.

Asking any other woman about it would most likely be too touchy, but I luckily had my girlfriend to ask!

She gave me an answer that went something like: "For me personally I just sort of came to realize that the human body isn't something to be ashamed of, and that there's nothing wrong with showing a little more skin. Beyond that cheeky bikini bottoms just look way better and are way more comfortable. Not sure if I can go back to full coverage ever again, haha."

Obviously not exactly in those words as there's no one I'd remember all that, but those are the same general ideas she shared.

That's my girlfriend's answer, and it's 100% valid, but I was wondering more on a wider societal level rather than just an individual woman's answer.

TL;DR For me it doesn't matter either way, but I'm just asking/wondering because it seems like a change that happened overnight (at least in my area).

They have just become more common and acceptable. I was on board several years ago. But as time goes on they are everywhere. From a practical sense, they are more comfy and give a better tan. People are just getting beyond the body sham times and are ok with it.

Trends when it comes to anything in general is pretty weird.

Video games for example were seen as stuff for extremely lame and socially inept people in the beginning, but now they're incredibly cool and popular and people even make money off of playing them; by either playing them competitively or uploading YouTube videos of them playing the games.

She even checks out other women with me. She's straight but just likes to see other women who take care of their bodies and dress well.

I can relate to her on that front. I check out other guys but not in a sexual way, just to see guys who take care of their bodies and dress well. Gives me inspiration to take better care of my body and dress better.

Similar to how women's bikinis went from full coverage to cheeky, men's swim trunks went from knee-length to mid-thigh. So it happened for both sexes. And I'm all for it, lol.

Haha, so true. And ah yes, men's swim trunks are definitely way easier to find the measurements for than women's bikinis!

I've learned it's best not to care what other people are doing, but on a logical level it doesn't make sense for an article of clothing called "shorts" to be long.

At the very least they should be an inch or two above the kneecap. Preferably shorter than that, but an inch or two above the knee should be the bare minimum if a person doesn't wanna show a lot of thigh or is just self-conscious or religious.

Those ankle length shorts/flood pants should have a different name.

For women above the knee is shorts, below the knee is capris.

Men's pants should have the same distinction. Above the knee is shorts, below the knee is "manpris" just to give it a placeholder name. Lol. Below the knee sure as hell ain't shorts either way.

Well, look at some of those old surfer movies with Frankie & Annette. Sure, you had some guys wearing baggies but what girls now call, "boy shorts" were named that because that's the kind of shorts boys used to wear back then. We were still wearing them in the mid `80's until Fart Simpleton came along wearing those shoe-length shorts and, suddenly, EVERYBODY wanted to wear them!! And, it wasn't bad enough that they had to go down to your shoes, they also had to look like they were made for guys 400 lbs.!! Each pair could've easily given an Ethiopian family of 4 a place to live and come in out of the weather!
Below the knee should be bike pants. You're wearing pants but they can't get caught in the chain.
When I was working at the print shop a decade ago, I usually wore normal length shorts but, they had an elastic waist so, if I wanted to, I could pull them way up. If I hiked them up just 2 or 3 inches, people got upset about me showing my thighs!! But nobody said shit about any of the office girls wearing short skirts where you could practically see their hooha's!!
Sometimes, just to be funny, I'd pull the waist up over my belly which made the shorts go about 2" below my crotch and I always got a big laugh from my bosses. "The pants that ate Fred Mertz!" (Watch episodes of, "I Love Lucy" and see how Fred wore his pants! The waist band almost went up to his tits!)
