In the U. S., why are women in bikinis considered acceptable, but not men in speedos?

In the U. S., it's commonly agreed upon that this:

Is completely unacceptable outside of professional swimming.

I mean sure, the woman has the bikini top making her look slightly more fully clothed, but the bottoms part look pretty much the same.

And more often than not, men's speedos are full coverage, while women's bikinis are cut to show off some butt cheek.

Her ass is not huge to begin with, but it's definitely a cheeky cut. And really common in my area.

So why exactly are women in bikinis alright, but not men in speedos? It never made sense to me.
