Girls, does politeness or friendliness come off as flirtation?

I'm usually very reserved and find it hard to make connections, so I thought I should try to be more open and friendly. I just noticed that if I'm too friendly, women will become cold/hostile with me. Like today, my friend and I were on a hike, and we passed by a jogger who decided to go off the path to let us pass. She said hi to my friend, but when I said good morning to her she made a face and didn't say anything. I didn't stop like I was trying to start a conversation with her, but I just said "didn't mean to interrupt your run" because she pulled to the side of us, and she just completely ignored me. I really tried to sound friendly and had no intention of trying to flirt or anything.

This just happens a lot when I go out for a coffee or drink. I used to think I was being reserved and unfriendly, but if I act to cheerful and friendly the server actually gets really unfriendly and rude with me. Sometimes I wondering if I'm just really ugly/creepy looking. I work really hard and exercise and try to be polite and do good things, but I feel like I get treated as repulsive.

This might be true in the US where everyone is mistrusting everybody and the simple fact to address someone may be seen as inappropriate, sexist, flirting or simply impolite.

In civilized countries like Western Europe, this would not be considered flirtatious simply because people there have a different perception of what is acceptable or not. Nobody carries a gun and will shoot you because you looked at them for 1/10th of a second too long or too intensively.

Most people will greet you and not ignore you in those civilized countries and talking with a stranger is not a crime as it seems to be in the US.

This whole story sounds like a farce. She would not have treated your friend (a stranger) like that and then you (a stranger) so harsh.

I'm not buying this and think you are going to go the woe as me route. That’s the vibe I get.

Yes it does. I mistaken one time in my life cause my old crush was like that and I actually thought he liked me nope. I wasn't use to guys who were nice to me. That's what happens when your ugly.
