A girl I work with and I started talking about 3 months ago, we found out we’ve got a lot of the same interests, and a very similar sense of humor. Not only did it become flirty, I became someone she trusts to talk about things she wouldn’t want to get around at work, and personal things others don’t know. She knows that everything said between us stays between us, and to this day nobody knows what’s said between us, or even that I have her phone number.
Eventually I asked if she’d want to go grab coffee, intending it as casual, she must have taken it as a date request, she responded that she was worried about being seen alone together outside of work, and that she already thought people were already thinking there’s something between us. Then she sent another text saying that she is attracted to me and has feelings for me. She was also worried that she hurt me. I told her I wasn’t hurt, that I understood her reasoning and the invitation is there if she changes her mind. I also told her that the feelings were mutual.
We’ve still regularly been talking at work, and what’s intended to be a 5 minute conversation always turns into 30 in our offices. It’s not only me that will stick around in her office, she will also do it in mine. It’s been hard to try not to show chemistry in front of others.
a couple days ago after visiting with her, a coworker went into her office and asked her if we were dating. So much for trying not to show that we’ve been attracted to each other. My concern though is, when I asked her for coffee it seemed like it scared her into putting the brakes on things, and I’m concerned that this might make her stop with any of our personal conversations. For some reason I have become extremely interested in her, and really enjoy our conversations, which isn’t normal for me. But I’m also the type of person that is able to keep my personal and work life separate, even in the event of a relationship with a coworker that goes badly,

What Girls Said
One of my friends tried interoffice dating and got ran out by gossip and rumors. Another tried and only she got fired. Another tried, she got pregnant, then her and the guy got fired. I have never seen this successfully play out, so I totally get her reluctance and where she’s coming from. Even if your job isn’t the type to fire either of you, I just wouldn’t do it. Maybe she’s be more open to it if one of you quit the job but until then she’s trying to politely and quietly draw a boundary line between what makes her comfortable and what doesn’t. Even a hint of dating rumors spreading (as suggested by that coworker) comes with that boundary.
I totally understand her reasoning and didn’t get upset about it, didn’t do a thing to make her feel bad, whatever happens in life happens. I already figured that there’d be talk either way because there’s only 10 people where we work and we are the only ones that aren’t married, and because of the demands of our type of work, there are times we have to work well past the time the office closes and everyone else is gone. So I’m not actually pursuing her, but the way we get along just seems to happen
I should also add, we have boundaries set already, we stopped any overt flirting, and the closest thing to flirting we do is being private about our conversations, as we do talk about things not work related, essentially just ending up in getting to know each other more
People shouldn't shit where they eat.
Im very familiar with that and completely understand why people say it. I’m the type of person that can keep personal and professional life separate, I’ve had a workplace relationship at another job in the past, kept all affection outside of work, and when we did break up, i was able to keep things at work professional, not having trouble. Its not something i just immediately try to get into, but sometimes attraction develops when you’re not intending on it
