If you are not communicating with your boyfriend or girlfriend, that you relation is doomed and you need not even be in one. Of course, there are topics that are more difficult to tackle and address, such as politics if both are not on the same wavelength.

Failing to communicate will soon result in misunderstandings and possible conflicts because the partner starts assuming things that may or may not be true. By communicating openly, you avoid those traps and you can hopefully have a deeper relationship on an intellectual level.

So, yes, it is OK and even, I would say it is mandatory.

You have to remember to be judicious and kind in what you say. Try not to be vindictive or mean. There is the problem with "too much information."

Often people ASK you to be honest, but complete honesty isn't what they actually want to hear. And how do you gauge this? By knowing them to some degree and by being careful.. It takes time and knowledge. Sometimes you'll screw up, but more often than not you'll get it right and deepen your friendships and relationships..

For the most part yes but there are exceptions, which I would put in two categories. One is things I won’t say to protect him or protect the relationship, the other is things I won’t say to protect other people for example friends.

For example: before we got together I had some sex stuff happen that I just don’t want him picturing so I have not told him, I don’t think it would be good for him or our relationship to picture it. It is nothing that has like, a health risk or really anything major just a visual I don’t think is helpful.

Second example, if one of my friends said something like, I don’t know, she doesn’t like his shirt (but I like it) I prob wouldn’t tell him “by the way Sarah doesn’t like your shirt,” I mean maybe I would if it was funny or harmless enough but I wouldn’t say it if I thought it didn’t have any purpose and would just make people feel bad or it might make him not like being around her or something like that.

Hmmm, that could be a “catch 22” situation. Be very careful what is said. Recently during pillow talk, I learned of an instance that I really wish I hadn’t. It was bad. The topic was previous sexual encounters, which never bothered me before …. ever. My partner told of a circumstance involving her and 3 guy friends of hers. Ultimately the decision was hers. It was not forced. This info I’m afraid, has negatively impacted my respect and therefore, my feelings towards her. I really do think that this will break everything. This, in my opinion, should have been taken to the grave – it’s out there now … you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube…

Depends on the relationship. Some people have certain boundaries and would rather not discuss certain things. Some are also sensitive, so you have to be mindful of what you say. It also depends on how well you know them and how comfortable you are with each other.
