Is it wrong to not have natural flowing conversations with your partner?

We’re not dating but most of the times it’s hard to hold a conversation. Normally I can hold a decent conversation with others but with him we talk about the same old thing. Work, games, sex, working out, gossip or whatever happens to bother us. We attempt to expand our conversations by asking questions be it personal, philosophical or just random asks. Those always get answered and that’s that. We know it’s an issue but not sure how to overcome it. At best, we have group conversations but normally I fall off and end up the quiet one in the background while friends take over. I’m extremely introverted and he’s pretty extroverted.
