I have a perverse sense of humor that I keep to myself for fear of scaring people away. Is that wise?

here are stand-up comedians (ie Louis CK) that share my sense of humor, but I doubt that this is considered standard for what is considered appropriate humor in everyday life.

As someone with a sick sense of humor, I tend to just be myself, it actually helps me make friends with like-minded people... then I just feel comfortable being me all the time. I almost never get offended by jokes, in the right spirit, ANY subject matter can be funny to me, so I do try to practice tact when I feel it's appropriate. By giving people a small hint of your sense of humor, you can get a feel for what they're into and what they might also find funny.

I never believe in diluting one's personality, be yourself :-)

Why should you change yourself? If I were you, I wouldn't keep it to myself. I have a strange sense of humour sometimes, and not everybody gets it all the time. But you could keep it down when you're around people who you know won't think it's funny or would look at you in a strange way. But totally cut it off? Nope, don't do it, don't "change" your sense of humour just because people can't deal with it. You could tone it down, clean it out or something to keep their feelings into account though.

I would just be yourself, I actually enjoy talking to people with a strange sense of humor since mine is odd itself and also perverted at times. I think you will find people that like your sense of humor after awhile.

Oh if it's just strange then go for it. I'm a super awkward person and I just go with the flow. If you're not being morally inappropriate then who cares? People will except you for you.
