Would people lie about their relationship status on Facebook?

Like say that your in a relationship when your single and vice versa. And why would people lie about this?

The guy I like and I can't be together right now due to hours and hours distance. We haven't met yet. So for right now, even though we are physically and emotionally "together," we both have "single" statuses up because 1) I don't want questions and 2) we both want to make sure we don't cut off other options for the other person. Though it would hurt a lot, it's more important that we find happiness somehow, even if it can't be with each other.

It messes with my head sometimes... :/ I just want to meet him so we can make it official, dammit.

There are

-People that just don't use Facebook much or they just don't care to change their relationship status

-People that don't want to attract people's attention so they leave it as is it.(the relationship status)

-People that change it for fun (like 'Married' between friends,or Widow,etc)

-People that change it all the time just to attract attention(but this happens most at quite young ages)

-People that just lie about it(mostly people that want their ex to see they moved on)(again usually very young people)

I never intentionally lied about it, but while I was dating I never changed my status from "single". I figure the people who care to know and want to know would already. Besides, I don't like for people to be all over me for dating someone (and being grilled about who he is, where we met, etc), not everyone I'm friends with needs to be updated on every detail of my life.

Only stupid people would do this, unless someone is stalking them. Then I could see them saying they're in a relationship, but as for single, it's because they're hoping to get with someone, and cheat.

I've only seen people do it as a joke, straight male friends 'engaged' or 'married' to another straight male friend, etc...

I put I was in a relationship with one of my guy friends one time because a weird guy would not take no for an answer..

i think its very possible, yes. I've seen people put that they are "married" to one of their friends just for fun.

My girlfriend is married to her bestie. I don't know people just joke around on Facebook.
