My friend called me superficial, why?

So a friend and I started talking about guys (she's not the prettiest girl either) and she said she wanted personality over looks and I said okay I prefer looks any day over personalities, like there are hot and gorgeous people with good personalities. She called me superficial I never said anything about her choice in guys so why is she calling me superficial?

She's calling you superficial because society defines superficial as caring more about a person's looks than a person's character.

However, you aren't wrong. And there is nothing wrong with being superficial when it comes to what you prefer in terms of relationships and what you find attractive. What you find attractive and how you choose who you date are your own personal decisions. You can decide who you want to date however you want. That's your own personal choice.

Your friend is just not thinking in broad open-minded terms. She is applying the word superficial to a situation where it does not apply.

Believe me all the girls who come up with crap they put "personality" first, are talking sh!t. How many girls have you seen put personality first? If an attractive guy asked your friend out, and an unattractive friend with awesome personality, with everything she can hope for asks her out, guess who she is going for?

Its human nature, its innate, nothing we can do about it, we can't override nature. Believe me given the choice all guys and girls put looks first. There is nothing superficial about it. In a way we're all superficial.

Maybe because you're ONLY basing a potential partner on looks. I don't know. Of course, looks are what initially attracts people but personalities are important too. However, I would need to be physically attracted to someone to be interested in dating them, but their personality is what would make or break the relationship. I'm not going to stay with a jerk just because he's "hot". I would much rather be with a nice looking guy who had a wonderful personality to match. So, I think it should be a combination of both.

I can't tell you how many times I've been initially attracted to a guy for his looks, only to find that he was really dumb and couldn't carry a convversation, or that we just had nothing in common...I think both are important in the sense that you should never settle for someone less than everything that you desire in a relationship, otherwise you'll never truly be happy... which will cause problems down the road.
