Why would a guy say he's shy?

This really outgoing guy started getting quiet around me recently.

Once I made a comment that he stands with us but doesn't talk like he thinks he's cooler than us. Just as a joke, and he got kinda weird and blurts out "i'm shy ok". He repeated it a couple times a while after.

Would a guy act outgoing with a girl for months then get shy around her?

Would a guy just say he's shy to get a girl to shut up?

What reasons could there be for a guy to say he's shy?

Because he IS shy. Shyness is a temporary thing. It usually happens when someone is new to something or someone is need to somehow break the ice. Extroverts can be shy too. Once they become used to the new environment they tend to get back to their extroverted self,

He may have recently developed feelings for you and doesn't know how to act around you. He is wary of everything he does as not to do or say something to out himself. If you like him too then a bit of flirting may open him up or letting it slip that he such a great 'friend'may let him know that there is no chance. E

So the change in dynamic in your friendship due to him catching feelings could be why he has gone quiet on you

He may be shy and working hard at being outgoing. Maybe someone in the group is now making that harder for him (someone cute?) Who knows? But it's v possible.
