Agreed men need to be assertive and respectful
There is no clear line between assertiveness and being disrespectful. What will be respectful for you, will be VERY disrespectful to another woman. Therefore guys that are worrying about being disrespectful can't be assertive.
I agree, there isn't a clear line that fits everyone. When I've known a woman for a while, as in a friend or co-worker or wife of a friend, I get a feel for what kind of jokes, kidding, conversation topics are OK or not in her presence. When you are meeting someone new or someone you don't know very well, it is not possible to make those distinctions.
