Best places to meet outdoorsy, but smart guys?

Is there a good place to meet guys who are outdoorsy and down to earth, but also intelligent and open minded?

Try football or hockey games. I know it's a long shot because a lot of different people are into football but it's a higher chance to meet a guy like that, than let's say starbucks

Forests = hiker's, hunters, forest rangers

Landscapes, landscape artists

Parks, all ranges of guys

What's the best way to start a conversation in these places? I go to several but most guys seem to be on dates. Or else they want some alone time (which is why I go too!)

Complmenting on a guys catch when fishing never hurts you could fish beside them ask one of your friends to teach you to hunt. Wouldn't bother a painter while he is doing his stuff you could hike along another hiker and make small talk about the trail and stuff. In a park it's really pick and choose wide variety of people there.
