Why do attractive people think they're ugly?

Question

I have a friend who's tall built like a tank and is freakishly strong and fast for even his size. I'm not gay, but he's a good looking guy not a pretty boy though. We train in an MMA gym together and he's probably overall our best fighter. He's also super smart and is into a bunch of smart stuff, but he's insecure as hell. In the gym women are always eyeing him and grown 25-30 year old women hit on him and he acts awkward or doesn't think anything of it. This even happens on the street. I ask him why he doesn't think any of these women want him is because he's unattractive. If he didn't think like that he'd have an easy time getting women. I have another friend like this, but thinks because he's huge women won't like him.

I have wondered this for a long time. The hottest girls thing they are ugly. I don't know if they really think they are ugly or if they want attention and to be told they are pretty. Probably some of both. There are girls on this very site that think they are ugly or average at best. Many of them are far hotter than modern "super models" are. I don't get it unless its just an attention getting thing. I think its probably that mixed with low self-esteem and modern media manipulation of what beauty is supposed to be.

I feel that way people tell me things that's because many people had told me things before and it's hard to all of a sudden get the opposite kind of attention you just don't believe it, or you think they are messing with you or not saying those compliments in a serious way

Attractive people think they're ugly because they're whole lives they have always had someone telling them how good they look so they've never had to build the opinion themselves or believe it themselves because everyone else did it for them.

It's possible that some people have been told they're unattractive many times in the past. After hearing insults like that so many times, people can start to believe it.

Self confidence issues. They know they do look good but they keep doubting it. Also someone might has said something bad about their looks because they were jealous and it's difficult to forget such things.

Because at one point in their life someone made negative comments about their looks. The media shows a standard beauty, which makes people who don't fit it feel less attractive. The list can go on as it can be different for each person.
