What does it mean if a guy calls you 'babe'?

I have been texting this guy for about 3 months now. We have not met because we live far from each other, but soon we will very soon cause we're going to the same college. We talk almost everyday and recently he called me babe..."babee what movie should I watch" is what he said. He's never called me that before and I was wondering what could that mean?

  • He's showing sexual interest in you. Stop over thinking it. Men call me "babe" all the time, and they are purely sexually interested in me. It's not as affectionate as "baby", but is still in the same boat. I call my boyfriend baby, because it's cute and it feels right saying it to someone you love. I usually call a guy babe if I have very little feelings in him and only sexual desire. I will, however, call my boyfriend babe sometimes as well, but it's usually during sex or when I'm aroused. I don't know if everyone feels this way, but that's what I can tell as far as emotions when I say the word. But don't over think it, it just means he's showing interest in you, higher than a friend level but lower than a girlfriend level.

  • It REALLY depends what you're doing when he calls you babe/baby.

Via text, it's possibly just a casual flirtation. He's trying to show some level of endearment that isn't as obvious as sweetie/honey/any other term that may allow you to start over thinking his motives.

Since we're girls, of course, any attempt a guy makes to stop us form over thinking anything they do/say a thing is relatively futile. Sigh.

Just see how it goes when you meet up. Watch his eyes and don't verbally bug him about what he means. His eyes and gestures will tell you everything you need to know.

Bask in the moment and just take it for what it's worth -- a simple term of flirtatious endearment.

  • If he didn't calls you 'babe' from the start, it means he doesn't use that word around much and he only uses it when he's become close/interested in someone. It most probably means he likes you in a way. But don't think that it necessarily means he wants to be your boyfriend, if that's what you're wanting it to mean. This guy here explains it pretty well:

  • Personally, I use the words "babe" and "sweety" as a word of flirtation and attraction.

I use those words rather loosely, and other people are REALLY strict about using those terms.

Seeing he is "sweet and respectful"...he probably means that he truly cares about you. :)

  • Yeah it's basically just a petname. Right up there with "dear", "doll", "hon" or whatever. It might be somewhat endearing but who knows. I think this is really one of those things you should use your "women's intuition" on and basically just go with that. It really could be anything. Still, I say if it makes you feel good, then at least you have that, but don't overthink it much.

    Probably just an idle petname.

  • It an insult... at least to me

I prefer my name and Im quick to tell a dude that. The guys who call me by my name at all times make me swoon the most.

"babe" is so impersonal. And extremely common Amongst males.

And I never call anyone babe but I have females who do call me that. Since they know me and I call them my dolls and buttercups.

  • Probably cause he still cares for you and might still feel close to you, but i wouldn't read too much into it.

  • It depends on what type of person he is. If he's like a popular guy or playboy, then it might be normal for him to call girls that. If he's not, then he's probably trying to subtly flirt with you.

  • I wouldn't put too much thought into his word choice. Although it's possible that he still has feelings for you, maybe "babe" is just his nickname for you. Some guys call their girl friends "babe" or other various things just because they feel like it or in a joking manner. Wait until he says something concrete about how he feels before you start making assumptions.

  • i don't use them often, if you hear me say any of these words: "babe, sweety'or the sentence "i love you" it means you've got me, since i don't even tell my parents or anyone for that matter that i love them.

  • it's a flirtation, implies he may put moves on you when you see him in person. Be ready for that! Whether it seems a good idea to you or not..either way, be ready!

  • If you knows he doesn’t have any girl in his life that’s mean he have feelings for you but don’t have the courage to tell you after being “friends with benefits” for two years..

  • It's just a word of endearment, I think you're looking in to it too much and I think you are confused about your feelings towards this guy.

  • I can't speak for him, but I have only ever used "babe" when talking to a girl I was in a relationship with already or wanted to be in one with.

  • Its always situational, but you can't make too much of it. Most of the time its just a flirty thing. Most guys say it without even realizing it. I'm sure he does like you and care, but there's no way to tell by that alone.

  • I was in the same situation once. Before me and my boyfriend started dating, we hadn’t met in person. And after 2 months of daily messages and FaceTime he started calling me “babe” and “sexy”. Then when we met in person a month later, he officially asked me out. So yes i agree with the comments above like it depends on the guy and how you are together, but a lot of guys use it as flirting or when they’re testing the waters to see if you’d like to take the relationship to the next step/ to see how you feel about him.

  • in some areas Babe, Bab, Sweet/Sweety, Duck etc are all terms of endearment... some places it is used as common speak towards pretty much anyone and everyone... nothing negative about it, it is a term used in friendly conversation or greetings

but in the rest of the cases where Babe is used it is in a where they are attracted to you and in 1 way letting you know how they feel towards you
some women/girls get so worked up over the use of babe, baby or even bab... and make out there are negative meanings behind its' use

I can say right now that chances are the meaning behind it is far from negative
