Why is he all of a sudden calling me pet names?

I have been having a on going fling with this guy for three years and he used to just call me by my name. But last week he started calling me baby girl and sweet heart. I asked him if he has been drinking because he never uses pet names. He asked if it was a problem him calling me that, I said not at all just that it is differnt. I thought nexr time I talked to him he would stop but he still called me that tonight. I thought he was calling me that because he doesn't want to confuse me with the other girls he is seeing. He told me that he is a bad guy that he doesn't know what he wants. I told him that I'm sure a lot of people don't know what they want.
Why is he all of a sudden calling me pet names?
