The man I been talking to went from nice to mean. Is this who he really is and was putting on a front to get me?

You gave absolutely no details, it's impossible to know. For all I know, you could have been mistreating him and he's simply responding in kind.

being bitchy or irritable is different than being mean. If he is having troubles somewhere maybe you can help him or be there for him, but If he is just being straight out man, you shouldn't stick around for that

It could be that something in his life is getting to him so he is acting out. Or it could be exactly what you mentioned. I'd bet on the first thing though...
