What does it mean when a guy growls at you while hugging? Im asking for a friend.

Well she was leaving and he was just hugging her and he growled. She said what and he said nothing. She asked him later what that was about and he told her it was a friendly growl.

Because it sounds like it was a "sexual growl". He was loving cuddling with her, he was enjoying it, flirting with her a bit and was starting to feel sexual things and the growl sounds like it was him expressing some of his sexual energy he has towards the girl. He said it was nothing and told her later it was a "friendly growl" because he did not want to make her feel uncomfortable but I think it was really the fact he was getting turned on and starting to feel sexual feelings towards her and it was him expressing it to her. That is what I believe.
