Why do guys blackmail girls a lot?

I mean to clarify this question. I use to be extremely stupid and shit anyway. So this one time I was dating this guy and I trusted him with one my secrets and it was a major secret and then he started blackmailing me a lot and I ended up self harming and some stuff because of all the things he'd say and want. Now my friend is getting blackmailed from this guy because they broke up or something. She hasn't told me the whole story and I'm worried.
So answer this question please. Why do guys blackmail girls a lot? Definitely if they know it will hurt the girl more.

Possibly from a male desire to dominate, control, and/or degrade/humiliate. I find most guys seek to exploit gals and have some form of power over them and blackmail appears to be a way for some of these guys.

Yea well it's stupid. Guys need to learn respect. I'm getting agitated over this. I'm very protective of my friend and when I found this out I almost punched a wall. It's very upsetting when I find out some guy is blackmailing my friend.

Yea I just wish guys wouldn't do it. I ended horrible and now my best friend is getting blackmailed by a guy but I found out from someone else. So she didn't directly tell me what's going on yet. So I can't texhnically go up and get it out of her. I can't push it. Some guys need learn respect.

If someone is blackmailing you, it is because they want something and don't care who they hurt. It is really that simple. Hopefully you can get some evidence of the black mail, and get him into serious trouble.

My parents found out and shit and I made them promise not to do anything because he could've been charged for sexual assualt. I just needed to know because it was me at first and I know how I ended I don't want it for my best friend.

I know it is easier said than done, but you should have charged him. Now he is free to hurt more women. If it isn't too late to charge him, then I hope you will destroy him in court. Hopefully this new girl can get some hard evidence that she can use against him.

I don't think it is common for guys to blackmail women that way, but it could go on more often than I realize.

I know I should have or should've at least talked to his parents but I didn't. Theirs no way I was doing that. I mean it would've been for the best but I just didn't feel comfortable with it. Also yes I hope my friend can do something against him and justify this. I don't want her ending like I did. She's a good girl and doesn't deserve this. I don't want her shutting me out neither. She knows my past with this and knows I will help but she didn't come to me. Also this seems to be going on more than people realize.

I've been through therapy already. My parents think it worked and I will let them think that but it didn't. Therapy was horrible. My friend honestly I still gotta get her to tell me face to face and help. I don't need any of this for her.
