Why would a guy try to make you jealous?

me and this guy have been friends for ages, we're in the same friendship group, anyway I was walking to our area and he looked up and saw me walk in and went running, literally running, over to this girl, he sat on her lap and started mucking around and flirting with her, straight after he done this he looked up at me to see my reaction. I didn't do anything I just left it.
A few minutes after he went over to another girl (my bestfriend) and started talking to her then looked up at me again, I moved away and sat with my other friends and as I look up he moved from where he was standing to straight opposite me and kept looking at me, was he looking for a reaction?
For the rest of that time he was just talking to different girls but kept looking straight at me then carried on talking to the girls, this is the first time he's ever done something like this but why? why was he trying to make me jealous?

also guys, when will you know that the girls jealous, like what will confirm that she's jealous and you've got what you aimed for?
