Are guys more protective of virgin girls?

I like this guy, and right we are just friends, but I told him I was a virgin, and he actually seemed shocked, he was like "No! Really?" "You're not a virgin!" I said "Yeah I am." Now, when he's sober he always says to me, "if any guy messes with you, I'll beat their ass." But when he's drunk, he's always saying "Seriously Erika if any guy fucks you, he's gone. Seriously!" He always says that if any guy "fucks" me he'll do something. So are guys protective over virgins like that? Or is it because he's the one that wants to take my virginity? I want serious answers because I really want to know what guys think on this. Girls can answer too of course. Thanks so much!
