What does it mean when a guy says he appreciates you?

This guy has told me twice now that he appreciates me more than I know.
In another note, he has also told me he is still in love with his ex.
We have never been physical and he doesn't reveal any emotions about me verbally. He has also told me he hears everything I say.

Ugh! I'm so frustrated, hurt and confused. pretty sure I've fallen for this guy. pretty sure he has feelings for me too (at least some). But he denies it! I'm so lost. Plus he's saying that he is still in love with his ex. He was the one who broke up with her bc he fell out of love with her and the sex was bad. I don't get how he can think he's still in love with her. ? I put my heart out there last night and it got crushed. But to make the pain worse he was so nice and comforting. I cried. Help

He isn't anything close to obsessive. He rarely shows any emotion or talks like this. I care for him a lot, that is why I am asking. He cares about human it but does not wear his heart on his sleeve romantically. We've been talking for four months. He is a huge player but he has not made a move on me. Even when we are drunk he remains respectful of me. I'm pretty sure he finds me attractive but rarely even hints to it. Or will say things that don't come off as serious or do it behind the comfort of a text. He loves my company and sometimes during our talks or at the end of the unofficial dates he is cheesing from ear to ear. When I try to get closer to him emotionally, he pulls back.
