Why did my crush give me a blank stare?

I was in P. E class and it was the end of the lesson and I was standing outside the change rooms waiting for my friends. My crush was walking pass and he smiled at me and I didn't smile back because at the time I didn't know that he meant it for me because I thought that he was smiling at his friends joke or something but then I realized it was to me and after that he was giving me a blank stare. Well it think it is a blank stare. I'll explain, it's looks like he is looking at me but a bit further away from my face the next lesson in P. E.
