What does it mean when a guy looks at you then looks away smiling to himself?

A few days ago, we went back to school. People were getting on the bus where I already was. When I looked up, I caught this guy, coming, looking at me, he didn't hold eye contact for long but had that little smile, kinda like a smirk (I felt he was smiling to himself, not really at me though he looked at me), and looked away on the side with the same expression. Later this day, when he saw me coming he glanced my way with the same smile.

I know this guy because exactly one year ago, he smiled at me (directly at me) in the bus and kept looking at me when he saw me during around 2 weeks. But I thought he was making fun of me since he's popular and all, so once I frowned at him, he looked at me, surprised with a smile (not a smirk) and didn't look anymore, except he keeps checking my ass out everytime I'm around.
