No, it's not bad at all. I suppose he was just startled by this sudden approach, and he wasn't expecting it. Just give him some time. If he likes you, he'll surely warm up to you. If not, it means he never really liked you anyway, so you got your answer. This allows you to move on, instead of having false hopes with him.
Ha! You should be fine I am willing to bet that he knew you were going to bring it up and he wants more time to think about his response and give you his full attention.
