Baking cupcakes for my crush?

There's this guy I like whose birthday is coming up soon. I want to make him cupcakes but am worried that it might come off as too forward, since he's a bit shy and I don't want to scare him off. I was just wondering if baking cupcakes is a good idea and if there's something in particular I should/shouldn't do. My friend suggested that I don't make it explicitly clear that I made it just for him, but should I say something dismissive like "oh, I was just making some and remembered that it was your birthday"? Should I decorate them a certain way, or avoid decorating them a certain way?

Also, for better understanding, we're pretty close. Not best friend type, but I can go up to him to give him a hug pretty comfortably.

Also, I was wondering about the amount I should give. I feel like giving one would be nice and simple, but half a dozen is a sweeter gesture. But I don't know if giving half a dozen would be over the top for a birthday gift, especially since we're just good friends at this point.
