He's understanding of you, it's just being nice.
Plus, most guys communicate different to girls. We're much more succinct in texting and phoning, there's no gossip or talking about other things than what the conversation is about. It's to the point.
A typical phonecall to a guy from another guy might just last 20 seconds and consists of 3-4 sentences, that's about it. We care about responding fast and exchanging information, so when you text him, he wants to make sure that you get his reply as soon as possible as he knows how irritating it can be to be the one waiting for a response, he's just being understanding and kind.

Some guys (and people in general) don't like leaving people hanging, myself included. Like some have already said, he just wants to let you know that he didn't just up and leave you talking to yourself intentionally. There was a reason for it and he just couldn't get back to you as quickly as he wanted to.
I apologize for not texting back too. It's bad to keep people waiting ya know. Also it's polite. And usually when i apologize it's because i didn't text back in says or weeks
He's being polite and nice. I apologize when I get back to people late sometimes because I genuinely didn't mean to.

Either to be polite or because he feels bad about it.
It just a thing to be polite I guess, as in.
"I saw your message but couldn't responds right now, sorry for that."He's being understanding of you. That's a nice gesture to have.
I apologize if I realize I didn't reply in a timely manor. I wouldn't want to be waiting for a reply for hours or days. So if I realize that's what happened, I apologize for it.
