He apologized for being a bad texter?

blissfully_unaware
I have been talking to a guy for about 2 months now, and we talk about once a day -more or less. Usually he is the one to start the conversation, but sometimes I do. A couple days ago I texted him first saying "Hey :)" and got a quick response as usual a couple minutes later. I asked him how his day was and he said, "just relaxing watching a hockey game, hbu?" I said, "same! just having a laid back day!"

I didn't really expect him to text back because he was in the middle of a really important hockey game so I just figured he'd text me back later. I was right, he texted me back a couple hours later, but this time it was different from his usual response of just continuing the conversation and ignoring the fact that he didn't message me back in 3 hours. He texted me "yeah laid back days are the best... I'm sorry by the way I'm the worst texter I feel like I take forever to respond when I'm in the middle of a conversation with someone"

I responded and reassured him that it was not a big deal and he has a life too. Then I also added in that I texted him during a hockey game.

SO... my question is: Was he apologizing about being a bad texter because he actually cares, or was he apologizing for maybe another reason I cannot think of?
