What does it mean when a guy defends you for absolutely no reason? Does he like me?

There's this guy I really like. All my friends and I always catch him staring and smiling. He does signs, but I'm not sure. Once, there was this girl who came up to me and started bothering me, she was calling me names and stuff. My crush had seen me walking around angry and stuff. the girl had stopped. However, soon my friend and I were walking near where this girl was, and she came back up to me and started a fight again. Now, we soon started arguing. So soon, I had just given up, and I told her to go and fuck herself and then I walked away. Suddenly, she starts screaming that I'm a bitch and stuff. As I'm walking away, I hear my crush scream, "EY YOU!". So I turn around, and I see him standing straight and clenching his fist. He looks at the girl and says, "Do you have a fucking problem? Leave her the fuck alone. If I ever catch you bothering her again I'm going to fuck you up!". I know you're gonna say that guys have instincts to protect girls but no guys really do that, and from what I heard, he isn't the type of guy who does that to just anyone. This guy is very protective of me, he always looks out for me. From what I've written, do you think that he likes me?

Just to add and to clarify, this isn't the only thing he has done.
Also, his friends have yelled out to me that he likes me and stuff, and he blushed when they said this. They also push him into me and call him my boyfriend and me his girlfriend.
Also, he called me on the phone after I gave him a letter with my # but voicemail picked up because it didn't recognize his #. He left me a sweet message.
