My crush called me ma'am?

I like this guy and I think he likes me back. We haven't dated yet. (On a side note: he is in the marines if that has anything to do with it). We are both in our early 20s. I sent him a good morning text. And he replied with "good morning ma'am" with a smiley face emoji. It threw me off because it made me feel old and like I was "friend zoned". So if a guy liked a girl, would he ever call her ma'am? Is it out of respect? Or is he being sarcastic? Or am I more like a friend/mother to him? Why did my crush call me madam?

Yep. Two things here - one he's in the military where it's habit so he did that most likely unintentionally.
Second I'mSouthern and use "Sir" or "ma'am" constantly to the point it is habit. I call women younger than me ma'am and I don't even notice.
So take no offense he probably doesn't realize he did it

Not necessarily, you know I like a girl and I keep calling her ma'am lot of times to make her smile, like when she tells me to do something, I tell her "Ok Ma'am", it's just in a joke manner to make her smile, ofcourse it doesn't mean that guy likes you back or not, I mean it would depend on the guy and several other factors, but it also doesn't mean he may not like you, it can be anything!
