To guys, when a girl buys you an expensive gift?

I gave him a gift and it's a bit expensive when you look it up on Google (but I bought it on sale so...). He didn't thank me or told me he was happy about the gift. He just told me, "You're so generous." And I felt a bit down because I thought he'll be glad about it. ): He mentioned earlier this year that he really really wanted to have something like this, so I decided to buy it for him on his birthday. Do guys hate it when girls give them expensive gifts?

I mean, there's a lot of things that can be going on. Personally a gift confuses me, as I don't often get one. My thoughts would be that I owe her one, which is a bit strange. Guys often like to do the gifting instead of the other way around.

It's also possible he was in a bad mood and tried to force a smile because of the gesture, maybe he didn't like the gift and feels like it would be bad manners to turn it down.

Would you be ok telling us what you bought him? It might help understand things. If it's really expensive that could be a sign that he thinks it's too much and thinks he can't give you anything of equal value. If it's something religious or if it has to do with a certain brand, he might not be a fan of it, etc.

I gave him a pocket knife. I only buy him gifts twice a year though, one for his birthday and one on Christmas. This is the first time I gave him something expensive. And I thought he'd like it since he told me early this year how he really, really wanted one. He said it would be handy.

He wasn't in a bad mood too. Did I just step on his ego for buying him something expensive? Knowing that guys often do the giving? Even though I bought it on sale? But I don't want to tell him that when I handed the gift to him.

A pocket knife should be fine, maybe he just ordered one himself or something like that and has to cancel his order now. Or maybe he had his sight set on a different pocket knife, that would be a bit petty of him, though.

It's a good gift, not outrageously expensive like a new laptop, so maybe something else is going on that's distracting him.

All in all, you sound like a good girlfriend, so don't worry too much. Not time you're cuddling, just honestly ask if he liked the pocket knife.

Exactly! It's not outrageously expensive. Sigh. Honestly, he can be pretty stingy; he's generous to a few people whom he thinks they deserve it.

I still think a pocket knife is a great gift. I got one for my birthday as a child and it's literally in my field of vision right now and I use it for many things. :)

well that could be how he expresses excitement. he might be stoic. or he might be a cheap ass, and thought in himself "shit, now i'm oblidged to buy her an expensive present as well".

I bought him a gift before and he outright expressed his excitement and kept messaging me how he likes it (all in capital letters). So I thought maybe he just didn't like this one. And you're probably right about the him being obliged to buy me an expensive gift. He's generous but selective, but overall he doesn't like spending too much.

well i hope things go well. maybe you think too much into it. maybe he is not the best character either. but noone is perfect. see how the relationship goes and if you see that this was not an isolated incident of grumpiness and ungratefulness, you are free to leave.

well i didn't imply that but yeah could be a valid point. i guess its easy for human brain to make generalisations and fallacious connections. "ha i bought what happened to be an expensive present -> reaction was moderately satisfying -> never buying expensive things again cause these cause discomfort". well it could be e was sad for other reasons. or prefered the money to be spent somewhere else. or the present not being the exact model he wanted but he knows he can't change it. or doesn't want to reciprocate with an equally expensive gift. or thought of it as creepy that you remembered (which would make him a total idiot cause a normal man would be happy that his girl is so thoughtful and a good listener). or you are too insecure about it and expect some super magical reaction from a gift. could be a million reasons.
