Interested in a guy from work. What next? Is it worth pursuing?

I started working in one department in November and am still there. We work with this other department constantly and so I see this guy almost every day. In the beginning, I didn't really think much about him. But then any time I assisted him or talked to him, he always gave this great smile and said "Thank you". He was the first person to be polite toward me and since then I've developed a crush on him.

I struggle with being shy around guys I like, but this time I tried to put myself out there to try; I initiate conversation and joke around with him. We make eye contact a lot - and due to the nature of our jobs, he's probably caught me checking him out without his shirt on multiple times - and he always seems eager to try and keep a convo going if I start it and he laughs at my terrible jokes/puns. If I'm telling a story to someone else in front of him, he'll throw in comments even though I wasn't directly speaking to him.

I want to get to know him outside of work, because now it's getting to a point where I'm not sure if he's actually interested OR if he's just being nice. He is a few years younger than me so a part of me wonders if he's shy or hesitant?

So I was advised to ask him to hang out outside of work; I was told if he's interested in me, then he'd be all for it and if he said "no" then he's not interested and it's time to move on. The problem is I'm hardly ever alone with him. There's quite a few other people around and due to my position, I don't want it to look like I'm slacking off work to hit on guys. I want to be professional.

Any advice? I tried to ask him earlier today, but I got cut off by another girl interrupting our chat and I never got another chance. I just kinda want answer, even if it's not the one I want.
