This guy does not speak unless spoken to?

So this guy wants to go on a date with me, but in terms of communicating before the date is to happen. I have to speak first, and once I do, we talk all through the night but its annoying to having to speak first.

he maybe has a sheild around him due to not trusting girls ... also he probably doesn't know what to talk about ... or he's been hurt by girls before and he's just waiting for you to ignore him later to discover that you where a waste of time ... and some guys are just depressed and its up to the girl to cheer him up ... this all is pretty much the way I am too. the "dont speak unless spoken to" thing its all about trust

He just might not be a very good conversationalist and can't start up conversations very well. Depending on how long you've known him, he might change once he gets warmed up to you more. If he doesn't, then he's just a not so talkative person.

Oh trust me, he can talk and talk. very outgoing, we've spoke on the phone, but I had to call him. on facebook I have to write first its crazy

It might be him being apprehensive, like he's putting value into you two talking. That's just a guess since you say he's usually outgoing, except around you.
