What does it mean when a guy softens his voice when he talks to a girl?

While being conversational, men can come across as boisterous, or loud. And with a gruffer, deeper voice, men can seem intimidating or unfriendly or unapproachable.
And all these things come from testosterone, which shapes the sound and scope of our voice.

Softening ones tone is usually done (and done unconsciously), to appear more affable, friendly, or approachable. To seem kinder, less judgmental, and disarming.
The down side is, despite the fact it is more or less done unconsciously, because it is such a noticeable thing, it draws some attention, and the people who do notice it usually think they are being condescended too, or treated like children.
Which is made all the more frustrating by the fact that they are usually the same people who, if men do not soften their tones for, accuse the men of berating them or trying to intimidate them.

In all honesty, it really is just an unconscious thing we do, as part of how our minds have evolved psychologically, to appear approachable, and nonthreatening.

That's a pretty normal thing that guys do around girls. I think it's probably to avoid intimidating them... women are a lot smaller than men, so it might be kind of scary to have someone who is so much larger than you talking loudly at you. I know my voice naturally gets quieter and softer when I'm talking to women.

The others have some good answers but i would like to add its possible he nervous or intimidated by you so he lowers his voice around you or maybe he he is trying not to be overheard.

Could mean something different for each guy.
To make sure they are understood.
To sound more manly and attractive.
To sound more gentle.
They're tired.
They're trying to be quiet.
Could be anything.

Probably depends. I do it naturally because I have 2 daughters and it's just conditioned me to be more gentle.

We men develop scary voice to push dangers away. It's a part of us, but we don't want to scare our people away.

Odds are he likes you. Apparently we lower our voices and heighten the pitches around women we like in order to mimic them.
