Why do guys lie about having a girlfriend?

I met this guy that I'm really into, and surprisingly he doesn't treat me like some girl he just wants to hook up with and forget about. He's very intrigued by the thought of getting to know me and always seems interested/curious in knowing who I am, my interests, etc. We've always been flirty and there's been something there since we first met but both of us won't speak on it. He's the type where he likes girls to make the first move which is frustrating. Anyways, I was told that he had a girlfriend of 4 years but I'm dumb and just haven't called him out on it. we have hangout., always texted and I haven't heard from him and now he's randomly texting me again after months. but he's still with the girlfriend.. why the hell do men do this. If he didn't get sex from me before I don't see why that would be the real reason to make his way back into my life. Does he just want to hook up or do you think he is interested but just doesn't wanna give up what he has with the gf? I need a man's point of view.
