Why do guys rub their thumb/fingers against my hand when holding hands?

Whenever me and me boyfriend hold hands he rubs his thumb and his fingers against my hand. I love it when he does this and it turns me on. But why do they so it? He is constantly feeling my skin. What does it mean? Thank you so much for all answers!!
