What does it mean when a guy sends you a selfie?

So earlier this week I confessed my feelings to one of my best friends. I didn’t really mention that I wanted to date him, just that I had feelings for him that I thought went away but recently realized they were still there. He was perfectly fine with it, seemed like a pretty neutral response from him (aka not being uncomfortable with it).

The only thing that seems a bit weird is that recently after I confessed he sent me a selfie. He has done this over the years, but this is a bit different, I guess. The other selfies over the years were of him just being goofy and stuff but this one seems a lot more ‘serious’ (aka it’s not like his typical picture).

The best way I can describe the image is that it’s taken from a little above the chest and up, with half of his face showing with him standing in front of the window (as far as I can tell, I can see the window’s light on the wall behind him). The lighting is quite nice in it and he’s smiling.

It just really took me off-guard because I woke up to it and it seems odd to send a picture like this after I mentioned how I felt. Again, any picture he has sent me in the past was usually goofy in some way, or the main focus wasn’t him but rather something else (ex: sending a picture of a cat on his lap).

I think it should be mentioned that this guy has liked me before, specifically in middle school. I’d also like to mention that he broke up with his (ex) girlfriend right before grade 12 started (we’re graduated now), which was pretty upsetting for him and at that time he mentioned how he wasn’t going to date anyone. He might be still hurt from it but I don’t know honestly. Just thought that context would matter.
