When I hug people tightly, it's usually because either I need the emotional support or they need the emotional support - especially because tight hugs are a physical representation of wanting to hold someone together who is falling apart.
I also a couple of friends about this and they either are naturally tight huggers or hug tightly to show emotional intimacy/closeness. A lot of holding people that close has to do with that you feel safe enough to hold someone that close to you.
The only reason I could think for strangers giving strangers tight hugs would be that they're highly emotional people - as in those who feel very "in the moment" and care deeply about the people around them. :)

It could mean just about any of those things, it all depends on the circumstance. Is the person crying? are they upset? if so, more than likely its because they want to offer comfort. Is this just a hug hello and goodbye? if they are lingering a little too long, it could be that they are seriously into the person they are hugging.
Hugs can mean any of those things. After my son was born a friend who happens to be a girl gave me a big hug to congratulate me. Another girl hugged me so tightly I thought she would break my neck when we'd not seen each other for over a year.
When I was younger - and single - there were times I went for the hug to feel a girl's figure if I was attracted to her.
Comfort is a huge reason to hug.
Any hug that is a "long" hug begins to release oxytocin and helps build trust and happiness together.

Wow, I didn't expect the women and men to vote so differently about this. For me when I hug someone tightly it's because I have an emotional connection with them and basically 2 things are happening. I'm letting them know I care and they mean something to me and secondly to share a physical bond moment with someone that hopefully also cares about me.

Some people are just more intense than others. They are hugging you tightly, and they don’t realize it’s a tight hug, because they’re used to that. But most people will adjust to the closeness some that some people want.
I only hug tightly because I only hug people that matter to me. If I don't hug you, it's either because you are uncomfortable with that, or because you aren't important to me. Most people aren't important to my life so I hug very few people.
I don't like hugs really unless it's with my partner. I hug my friends when we say hello and goodbye to be nice. If I hug someone tightly it means I like them a lot romantically.

I do it because it feels good. It's a bonding moment. When I hug, it is a hug of love and friendship not for romantic purposes
