He starts conversation, but ends it pretty quickly. Why?

Hi! So here's the situation. He started conversation a few times, and as I find him pretty attractive and nice, I try to keep the conversation going. (very) shortly after, his answers are rather short and he doesn't make a lot of effort to keep the conversation going. What do you think that means?

Maybe he's quite shy, gets stuck and doesn't know what to say after starting the conversation?
Or maybe he's relying on you to make efforts because he "started it".. It's hard to know for sure because so many guys are lazy when it comes to this stuff and end up being "cold" even though they like you haha.
I'm similar to this too though, I have no problem starting the conversaion but I don't know how to maintain it and end up leaving people on read even though I don't mean to at all, so maybe he could be like this as well.
