What does it mean when a guy tells a girl this?

There is this guy at my college and he has been saying good afternoon to me when he sees me. For the first time, I was at a table working on lesson and I glimpse someone pass by but I had my back turned. I heard the person say good afternoon but I thought they was talking on a cell. Then the person said it again but a little louder. I was actually caught off guard and it happened so quickly until I just said hey. I happened to see him another day and he said good afternoon and I said hi, then another day he said good afternoon my sister, so I finally said good afternoon back.

I really would like to know what does it mean when a guy tells a girl good afternoon or good afternoon my sister? It could be he's just being nice, he's interested, or maybe its nothing at all. I have been thinking about what he says and its nice but I would like to know what all of it means.

I believe it's just a hello, but a hello in a sense to get your attention. The second time he said "Good Afternoon" with emphasis means that he really is trying to get your attention. Usually when guys go out of there way to get your attention, he's interested. That's all it means. So use your best judgment and see if you'd like to get to know him or not.
