He stared into my eyes for 3-4 seconds? What does this mean?

I worked with a doctor and recently lost job due to covid. When I was leaving I said I wish you good luck etc and he said same then stared into my eyes for 3-4 second straight, niether of us smiling (i am interested in him btw) then he looked away with his face with what i made out as really sad, almost about to cry. This eye contact has happened before were after a convo we keep looking at eachother's eyes intensely without saying anything. I can't make out what this means. He also would fidgets a lot, and other times havetrouble holding eye contact, smooth down his hair etc. Mixed signals so i I don't know now that I've left if these signs mean he was interested now, he can reach out
