I've just split with my boyfriend of 3 years, I told my boss as he kept mentioning him and he said "I don't know why you were with him anyway", I told my colleague who's also my friend and she said that whenever my boyfriend would visit me at work he would say "she's beautiful, funny and lovely, why is she with him?".

Was he just being nice? Bearing in mind I have worked there for six years and we are all jokey with each other and very close.

Your boss whats a relationship with you that's why. He's been wanting to for probably the entice 6 years you were there. This is why you don't get too chummy with people you work with because you don't know what you're inviting. He was waiting the day you would break up with him so he can make his move. And he did. That wasn't a compliment, he was making advances. It is up to you now what you decide to do with that information. But know if you get into a relationship with him, it can cause a lot of potential problems at work and your future. Especially if he is much older than you which sounds like it. Be extremely careful and keep your business private.
